How have streaming services like Netflix changed the way people watch movies?

Streaming services are changing viewing habits by making films and series available at any time without having to wait for television broadcasts or go to the cinema. In the past we might have had to wait for a certain program at a certain time, whereas now we can simply select a title from the catalog and watch it straight away. Recommendation systems also allow users to discover films they might not have searched for themselves. For viewers, this provides enormous convenience because they can decide for themselves when and what they want to watch.

These changes also affected the film industry. Studios are now not only thinking about cinemas, but also considering distribution via digital platforms. Series can even be designed with a story pattern that makes the audience want to continue watching the next episode. On the other hand, the large number of choices can also be a problem because people spend time choosing instead of watching. In my opinion, streaming is not just about replacing television or reducing dependence on DVDs. It changes the relationship between viewers and content as viewers now have much more control over when, where and how they experience their entertainment.
