Class ranking can actually provide a simple picture of academic results, but problems arise when ranking is used as the main measure of a child's success. Children who are always at the top of the rankings may feel they have to maintain their position and are very afraid of falling. Meanwhile, children who are ranked at the bottom may start to think they are stupid, even though they actually have other abilities that are not visible from test scores. If this condition persists for a long time, the school which is supposed to be a place of learning can feel like a place to continue to prove oneself.
What is more dangerous is when parents compare children based on ranking. Sentences like "Why can't you be like him?" It may seem simple, but it can make children feel that love or appreciation is only given when they excel. This does not mean that academic achievement is not important. Grades can still be used to evaluate the learning process, but should not be the only measure of a child's abilities. Children also need to be appreciated for their perseverance, creativity, ability to work together, courage to try, and their own development. Education should help children develop, not make them afraid just because they are in a certain position on a list.
