Hello, Friends of Unique Facts.
When most people hear the name Sahara Desert, they immediately imagine a vast expanse of dry, hot sand. But thousands of years ago, this place apparently had very different conditions.
About thousands of years ago, parts of the Sahara were once green areas with lakes, rivers, grasslands, and were even inhabited by various animals such as hippos and giraffes.
This change occurred due to natural climate changes which changed the rain patterns in the area. When rainfall increases, previously dry areas can become more fertile.
Evidence of the Sahara's past is discovered through ancient rock paintings and research into soil deposits in the region.
This fact shows that the Earth's surface is always changing. Even a place that looks barren now could have had a very different history millions of years ago.
