When I first heard that octopuses have three hearts, I thought it was just a myth. It turns out, this fact is true and has long been known in the world of biology. Compared to many other animals, the octopus's circulatory system is very unique.
Two of the three hearts are responsible for pumping blood to the gills so that the blood can take in oxygen. Meanwhile, the other heart pumps oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. This division of tasks helps the octopus meet its oxygen needs when moving in the water.
Even more interesting, the octopus's main heart will stop beating temporarily when the octopus is swimming. For this reason, octopuses often choose to crawl on the seabed rather than swim for long periods. This way of moving makes energy use more efficient.
Another unique fact is that octopus blood is not red like humans. Their blood tends to be bluish in color because it contains hemocyanin, a protein that uses copper to transport oxygen. This protein works more effectively in cold marine environments and has lower oxygen levels.
In my opinion, the more you get to know octopuses, the more you feel that these animals are truly extraordinary. Apart from having three hearts, octopuses are also known to be very intelligent, able to solve simple problems, open the lid of a container, and even disguise their body very quickly to avoid predators.
If I may conclude, the octopus is one of the animals with the most unique body system in the ocean. Three hearts, blue blood, and high adaptability make it an example of how diverse life on earth is. Facts like this remind me that there are still many natural wonders that are not widely known, even though we often see these animals on television or in aquariums.
