Is Religion Important or Not?

Religion plays an important role in human life, especially in shaping human values such as respect, forgiveness, helping others, and caring for fellow human beings. The importance of religion can also be understood by looking at the conditions of the society in which its teachings are practiced.

One example in Islam is the teaching that smiling at another person is considered an act of charity. In a society where people are already accustomed to respecting and greeting one another, smiling may seem like an ordinary behavior. However, in an environment filled with hostility and hatred, a simple act such as smiling and greeting someone can have a much greater meaning.

Islam teaches brotherhood, equality, helping one another, forgiveness, and avoiding hatred. These values can help improve social relationships and reduce conflict. Forgiveness is also beneficial because it can resolve many problems and help people maintain better mental well-being.

Religion is not only concerned with the relationship between human beings and God. It is also closely connected to human life in this world. Religious teachings can serve as guidance for people to live according to values of goodness and humanity.

Values such as helping and forgiving others are not found only in Islam. Many human civilizations and traditions also recognize these values. Therefore, discussions about religion should be conducted with mutual respect and openness toward different perspectives.

Religion should also be understood wisely. A religious understanding that focuses only on certain aspects while ignoring humanitarian values can lead to religion being used to justify actions that contradict the principles of goodness and humanity.

Changes in society also influence the way people understand religion. The development of science and technology has taken over some of the roles that religion once played in explaining aspects of human life. However, scientific and technological progress does not necessarily have to be viewed as a threat to religion.

Instead, science and technology can be used to improve the quality of human life. In this context, religion can provide an ethical foundation so that scientific and technological development is directed toward benefiting humanity rather than causing harm.

Certain forms of religious practice may also change as society develops. One example is the use of siwak, a traditional method of cleaning the teeth. In the past, siwak was an appropriate method according to the conditions of its time. Today, people have more modern technologies and methods for maintaining dental hygiene.

Although lifestyles, technology, and civilization continue to change, values such as goodness, sincerity, justice, and concern for others remain relevant. Therefore, religion can be considered important not only because of its rules or forms of practice, but also because of the humanitarian values it teaches.

Ultimately, religion can serve as guidance for people to live better lives. Humility, respect for others, forgiveness, helping others, and using science and technology responsibly are important parts of a life based on humanitarian values.
