Indonesia’s Trade Minister Budi Santoso has emphasized that export opportunities should be more accessible to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), rather than being dominated by large companies. The government is encouraging smaller businesses to introduce their products to international markets.
Budi made the statement while attending the release of cultivated ornamental coral from Banyuwangi for export to the United States, with a shipment value of approximately US$2,500, on Friday, August 28, 2026.
According to Budi, the government is helping export-ready MSMEs connect with potential overseas buyers through a business matching program. Businesses can present their products online, while Indonesian trade representatives in destination countries assist in identifying suitable potential buyers.
The program has recorded significant growth. Transactions generated through the program reached US$134.8 million last year. From January through July 2026, the transaction value had already reached approximately US$333 million.
Notably, around 70 percent of the businesses participating in the program had never exported before. As a result, government assistance does not stop at connecting businesses with buyers. New exporters also receive support through training and guidance on meeting international product standards.
For Banyuwangi MSMEs whose products have already entered the US market, Budi believes the next challenge is primarily expanding their market reach. Their previous export experience provides an important foundation for entering additional international markets.
Budi also highlighted the importance of cooperation among MSMEs. When one business cannot meet a large order on its own, collaboration with other businesses can help increase production capacity while strengthening Indonesia’s broader export ecosystem.
The initiative reflects the growing opportunities for smaller Indonesian businesses to compete internationally. However, meeting international standards, maintaining product quality, increasing production capacity, and developing reliable buyer networks remain essential for long-term success.
For MSMEs, entering the export market is not simply about finding overseas buyers. It is also about building a stronger business capable of consistently meeting international demand.
