If you have a cat, you've probably bought a soft and comfortable pet bed at some point. Then your cat completely ignores it and curls up inside an old cardboard box instead. As strange as it seems, this behavior is perfectly normal and has been studied by animal behavior experts.

One of the biggest reasons is security. A cardboard box provides a small, enclosed space where a cat feels protected from potential threats while still being able to observe its surroundings. In the wild, cats naturally seek sheltered places where they can rest without feeling exposed.

Cardboard is also an excellent thermal insulator. Cats generally prefer warmer temperatures than humans do, and cardboard helps retain body heat. That makes it a cozy place to relax while using very little energy to stay warm.

Interestingly, researchers at Utrecht University in the Netherlands found that shelter cats adapted more quickly to unfamiliar environments when they were given cardboard boxes. The cats with boxes showed lower stress levels and became comfortable with their surroundings sooner than those without them.

So if your cat chooses a simple cardboard box over an expensive cat bed, don't take it personally. To your cat, that box isn't just trash—it's a safe, warm, and comfortable place to rest.
