Johann Zarco is aiming to return to MotoGP action at the 2026 Aragon Grand Prix after recovering from a knee injury. However, LCR Honda is not taking any chances and will keep Cal Crutchlow available as a backup option.
The Aragon Grand Prix is scheduled for August 28–30, 2026. Before being allowed to race, Zarco must first pass the mandatory medical assessment at the circuit. The examination will play an important role in determining whether the French rider is ready to return to the Honda RC213V.
If Zarco is considered unfit to compete, Crutchlow could once again step in. LCR Honda plans to bring the experienced rider to Aragon as a precaution in case Zarco struggles to complete the race weekend.
Crutchlow has already served as Zarco's replacement since the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello. During that period, he competed in six rounds and recorded a best finish of 16th place.
His return to MotoGP is notable because Crutchlow had previously ended his full-time premier-class career at the end of 2020. He later made a wildcard appearance for Yamaha at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix before being called back by LCR Honda in 2026 to cover for Zarco.
Crutchlow also has a long-standing connection with LCR Honda. He raced for the team from 2015 to 2020, collecting three MotoGP victories and 12 podium finishes. All three of his premier-class wins came while riding for LCR.
Zarco, meanwhile, has managed to bring his recovery schedule forward. His return was initially expected to happen in September, but progress with his injured left knee ligament has allowed Aragon to become a potential earlier comeback date.
The French rider opted to recover without undergoing surgery. During the rehabilitation process, he gradually increased his training load, including riding a supermoto bike and a Honda CBR1000RR to rebuild his physical condition.
Despite being cleared to travel to Aragon, Zarco's participation is not guaranteed yet. He will still need to pass the medical examination and determine how his body responds once he gets back on the MotoGP machine.
The Aragon weekend will therefore be an important test for both Zarco and LCR Honda. If he is declared fit, Zarco could make his return earlier than originally expected. If not, Crutchlow will be ready to step in once again.
