Many people think that all deserts must be hot because they are synonymous with sand and hot sun. However, in reality that is not always the case.
Deserts are actually areas that receive very little rainfall. So the size of a desert is not determined by temperature, but by the amount of water that falls each year.
Because of this, there are very hot deserts like the Sahara Desert, but there are also cold deserts like the Gobi Desert which can experience very low temperatures and even snow.
The cause could be the location, altitude of the area, and wind patterns which make it difficult for the area to get rain.
So when you hear the word "desert", don't immediately imagine a place full of hot sand. The world has many types of deserts with very different conditions.
