Switching from fossil energy to renewable energy is not just about installing more solar panels or wind turbines. One of the big challenges is keeping electricity supplies stable when energy sources such as solar and wind depend on natural conditions. When the sun doesn't shine or the wind weakens, the electricity system still needs other energy sources. Therefore, the energy transition requires a more flexible electricity grid, energy storage, complementary generation, and electricity management systems that are able to adapt to changes in supply and demand.
Another problem is the very large investment costs, infrastructure, technology, licensing and economic dependence on the fossil industry. Many countries also still use coal, oil or gas for electricity, transportation and heavy industry so the transition cannot be done in just a short time. There are workers and regions whose economies depend on the industry so the transition also has social impacts. In my opinion, the biggest challenge is actually how to make changes quickly without making energy supplies unstable or energy costs too high. Therefore, the energy transition requires a combination of technology, investment, government policy, network development and changes in consumption patterns.
