RCW 49 – A Stellar Nursery
Located about 13,700 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus, this region is one of the most prolific star-forming grounds in the Milky Way. It houses more than 2,200 stars, many of them deeply buried in dust.
Invisible at optical wavelengths, the nebula becomes transparent through the infrared eyes of the Spitzer Space Telescope. Blue tones mark older stars, green filaments trace gas, and the red-pink tendrils reveal dusty clouds. More than 300 previously unseen newborn stars are exposed in this view.
