When walking on the beach, we might assume that all the grains of sand come from rock that has been crushed over millions of years. This assumption is true for many beaches in the world, but it turns out it doesn't apply to all of them. In some areas, beach sand actually comes from living creatures. This fact makes many scientists interested in studying how beaches can form in very different ways.
In tropical areas filled with coral reefs, most of the white sand comes from coral fragments, shells and the skeletons of marine organisms which contain calcium carbonate. After the organism dies, the rest of its body is slowly destroyed by waves, ocean currents and other natural processes until it turns into small particles. This process takes a very long time, it can even take hundreds to thousands of years before it finally forms a beautiful stretch of white sand.
There is one sea creature that has a big role in this process, namely the parrotfish. This fish eats algae that sticks to the surface of coral. When biting coral, a small part of the coral is swallowed. In the digestive system, the parts that are not needed will be crushed into fine granules and then expelled again as sand. An adult parrotfish can even produce hundreds of kilograms of sand a year. Without realizing it, these animals help shape beaches which often become tourist destinations.
Not all beaches have white or brown sand. In several countries there are beaches with black sand that comes from volcanic activity. The cooled lava then disintegrates into small grains due to waves and weather changes. There are also pink beaches because they are mixed with fragments of red marine organisms, as well as green beaches which are formed from certain mineral content. The color of the sand apparently tells a story about the geological history and ecosystem of the area.
Because the formation process is very slow, beach sand is actually a resource that is not easily replaced. Excessive extraction of sand for development can cause abrasion, damage coastal animal habitats, and change the shape of coastlines. That is why many countries are starting to tighten regulations regarding sand mining so that the natural balance is maintained for the next generation.
Next time you step on the sand on the beach, try looking at it from a different perspective. Behind small grains that feel ordinary, there is a natural journey that lasts for thousands to millions of years. Some come from rocks, others come from marine life which continues to work to form the beautiful beaches that we enjoy to this day.
