Actually, pencil writing is not ink, but a thin layer of graphite that sticks to the surface of the paper. Well, the material on the eraser has a stronger adhesion to graphite than paper.
When you rub it, the graphite sticks to the eraser, so the writing slowly disappears. If you look closely, the lumpy eraser marks are actually a mixture of eraser rubber and graphite.
So every time you erase writing, what actually happens is not that the writing "disappears", but is transferred from the paper to the eraser. A small detail that perhaps only comes to mind now. 😄
