On the border of California and Oregon, United States, there is a lake called Tulare Lake which has a very unique story. This lake was once one of the largest freshwater lakes in the American West. However, due to irrigation projects and diversion of river flows for agriculture since the late 19th century, the water slowly disappeared until the bottom of the lake turned into agricultural land. For decades, many people thought the lake was just part of history.
Even though it has "gone", the lake basin actually still exists. The only thing that has changed is the presence of water. When the rainy season comes with very high rainfall and the snow in the mountains melts in large quantities, the rivers that flow into the area are no longer able to accommodate the water flow. As a result, water filled the old basin again and the lake, which had not been visible for decades, slowly reappeared.
This phenomenon will occur again in 2023. Very high rainfall and snowmelt in the Sierra Nevada Mountains have caused water to inundate thousands of hectares of land previously used as agricultural areas. From satellite images, the shape of the lake that has reappeared is very similar to a lake map made more than a hundred years ago. Many people who have never seen it are surprised because it is as if a giant lake suddenly appeared out of thin air.
These events show that landscapes do not always change permanently. Some seasonal lakes can appear and disappear depending on climatic conditions, rainfall and river flow. In the case of Tulare Lake, humans have indeed changed the flow of water for agricultural needs, but nature still has the ability to "take back" the area that was originally a lake basin when the volume of water increases drastically.
For scientists, the reappearance of this lake is important research material regarding climate change, water resource management, and the relationship between human activities and environmental conditions. This event is also a reminder that the map we see today does not mean it will always be the same in the future. Nature is constantly changing, sometimes very slowly, but occasionally it can change in surprising ways.
The story of Tulare Lake proves that the Earth still has many phenomena that are difficult to predict. The lake, which for decades was thought to have disappeared, is apparently just "waiting for its time" to reappear when natural conditions are favorable. Facts like this make us increasingly aware that nature always has its own way of changing.
