Does Closing Background Apps Really Save Your Phone's Battery?

Many people make it a habit to close every app before locking their phone, believing it will help the battery last longer. It sounds logical, but that's not always how modern smartphones work.

Both Android and iPhone are designed to manage background apps automatically. When an app isn't actively being used, the operating system usually limits its activity or puts it into a low-power state. That means an app shown in the recent apps list isn't necessarily consuming battery.

In fact, constantly closing and reopening apps can sometimes use more power. When you reopen an app that was completely closed, your phone has to load everything again instead of restoring it from memory.

There are exceptions, though. If an app is malfunctioning, constantly using GPS, streaming data in the background, or refusing to sleep properly, closing it can help reduce battery usage and improve performance.

So there's usually no need to clear every app from your recent apps screen. Let your phone handle memory management, and only close apps that are frozen, behaving strangely, or clearly using resources they shouldn't.
