🐆 BEHIND PRISON WALLS, AN ENDANGERED KING STILL SURVIVES.
Behind the walls and heavy security of Nusa Kambangan lives one of Indonesia’s rarest predators:
The Javan Leopard (Panthera pardus melas).
Nusa Kambangan isn’t just a prison island. It is also one of the last strongholds for a species facing growing threats to its survival.
And there’s an unexpected irony...
Because human access to parts of the island is highly restricted, some of its natural habitat has remained relatively protected. Without anyone intending it, an island known for its prisons has also become a refuge for wildlife.
📊 THE FACTS:
• An estimated 100–150 Javan Leopards remain on Java
• Nusa Kambangan is considered an important area for the species’ survival
• Major threats include poaching and habitat loss
Javan Leopards may rarely be seen by humans.
But that’s exactly what makes their presence so precious.
🌿 Sometimes, the places humans can barely reach become the last places where wildlife can survive.
