On Friday, July 31, 2026, the Indonesian government announced the return of Merdeka Run as part of the country's celebrations for the 81st anniversary of independence. Unlike many organized running events, this year's event will be free, allowing people from different backgrounds to take part in the Independence Month celebrations without paying a registration fee.
Deputy Minister of State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro announced the plan during a press conference at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Friday. He described Merdeka Run as a fun run designed to give people a chance to participate directly in the national celebration rather than simply watch the official ceremonies.
The route will begin in front of Merdeka Palace. Several distance options are being prepared so that people with different levels of running experience can participate. Organizers will also provide medals for participants and prizes for the winners.
The free-running concept continues the spirit of previous Merdeka Run events, which have combined exercise with Indonesia's Independence Day celebrations. The government sees the event as an opportunity to bring communities together while encouraging a more active and healthy lifestyle.
Merdeka Run is part of the broader 2026 Independence Month program involving government ministries and agencies, state-owned companies, regional administrations, the military, the police, and other groups.
