I just realized that it feels like I almost never wake up from sneezing. At first I thought it was just a coincidence, but it turns out there is a scientific explanation. When we are truly asleep, the body works in a different way than when we are awake.
When entering a sleep phase, especially deeper sleep, the activity of the nervous system changes. The small stimuli in the nose that normally trigger the sneeze reflex become much weaker. As a result, the body does not react easily even if there is dust or small particles around.
This doesn't mean that sneezing is completely impossible during sleep. Under certain conditions, for example if the stimulation is strong enough, the body will actually wake up first. After waking up, the sneezing reflex occurs. That's why most people remember sneezing after waking up, not when they were actually asleep.
In my opinion, this shows that the body has its own way of prioritizing rest. During sleep, the brain tries to prevent us from being easily awakened by stimuli that are not very important. However, if there is something that is deemed to need attention, the body will wake us up first.
I also learned that the mechanism of sleep involves many other changes, such as slowing of breathing, decreased heart rate, and relaxation of most muscles. All of these processes work together so that the body has the opportunity to restore energy before we return to our activities.
If I may conclude, most people do not sneeze when they are actually sleeping because the sneezing reflex is suppressed during the sleep phase. If there is a strong enough stimulus, usually the body will wake up first and then sneeze. This simple fact shows that when we sleep, the body continues to work very regularly to maintain a balance between rest and self-protection.
