I always thought dragonflies lived for years because they're around every time the weather gets warm. It turns out I couldn't have been more wrong. The flying stage that we recognize as a dragonfly is actually the shortest part of its life. Before taking to the air, most dragonflies spend months—or even years—living underwater as young nymphs. Once they become adults, many species only have a few weeks to fly, hunt, and reproduce.
