When RMS Titanic set sail in April 1912, it represented the very best of early twentieth-century engineering. Stretching nearly 269 meters in length, the ship was one of the largest and most advanced ocean liners ever built. Newspapers praised its cutting-edge design, and over time, the public embraced the idea that Titanic was practically unsinkable. Although that phrase was never the company's official slogan, the ship's reputation for safety became one of the biggest reasons so many people trusted it.
A major part of that confidence came from Titanic's innovative construction. The ship was divided into 16 watertight compartments designed to limit flooding if the hull was damaged. Engineers believed the vessel could remain afloat even if several compartments filled with water.
