Walking through Jakarta's Old Town feels like stepping back in time. The well-preserved Dutch colonial buildings remind visitors that this area was once one of the busiest trading hubs in Southeast Asia.

During the 17th century, the city—then known as Batavia—became the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Asia. Its location on the northern coast of Java made it an ideal port for ships carrying spices, textiles, ceramics, and many other valuable goods from across the region.
