Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valleys are among the driest places on Earth. Scientists believe that some areas have not experienced rainfall in liquid form for millions of years. Even snowfall is extremely limited because the air contains very little moisture.
This remarkable dryness is caused by powerful katabatic winds that rush down from Antarctica's high interior. These cold, fast-moving winds remove moisture from the valleys and prevent clouds and precipitation from forming, leaving the landscape exceptionally dry despite its location on an icy continent.
Instead of being covered by thick snow, the valleys are dominated by exposed rock, gravel, and permanently frozen ground. Their barren appearance resembles a rocky desert more than a polar landscape, making the region one of the closest natural environments on Earth to the surface of Mars.
