When I talk about one of the greatest kingdoms in the history of the Indonesian archipelago, the Majapahit Kingdom is one of the most important names to remember. This kingdom, which developed in East Java, became known for its wide influence, strong culture, and important role in the political history of Nusantara.
The Majapahit Kingdom was established around 1293 CE after Raden Wijaya founded a new kingdom following the fall of Singhasari due to Jayakatwang's attack from Kediri. Its capital was located in the Trowulan area of East Java, which remains an important location for historical research today.
Majapahit's golden era is often associated with the reign of King Hayam Wuruk during the 14th century. Under his leadership, the kingdom experienced major developments in government, trade, culture, and relationships with other regions.
For me, one of the most famous figures in Majapahit history is Gajah Mada. He is known for the Sumpah Palapa oath, a political ambition to unite many regions under Majapahit's influence. Although historians continue to study many details, his role remains an important part of the kingdom's story.
Majapahit developed strong trading connections with many regions across Asia. Its strategic location allowed the kingdom to become part of important maritime trade routes. Goods such as spices, agricultural products, and other valuable items supported the kingdom's economy.
Beyond politics and trade, Majapahit also contributed greatly to art and literature. One of the most famous works from this period is the Negarakertagama manuscript written by Mpu Prapanca. The text provides valuable information about Hayam Wuruk's reign, territories, and society during the Majapahit era.
However, Majapahit's influence gradually declined. Internal conflicts, struggles for power, changing trade routes, and the rise of new kingdoms in the region contributed to its weakening.
Even though the kingdom eventually disappeared, Majapahit's legacy continues today. Its influence can still be found in culture, language, art, and historical traditions that remain part of Indonesia's identity.
For me, the history of Majapahit shows that a kingdom is not only remembered because of its size or power, but also because of the ideas, culture, and heritage it leaves behind.
