MIMIKA — Security conditions in the Kwamki Narama District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, have heated up again after clashes between groups that killed one person, Sunday (4/1/2026) afternoon. The bloody incident involved two groups, namely the Dang and Newegalen groups, and occurred on the main road in the local area.
The victim is known as Jori Murib. He reportedly died after being shot with arrows by a group of people during the dispute. Kwamki Narama Police Chief, Inspector Yusak Sawaki, explained that the incident occurred at around 13.25 WIT, precisely around the Kwamki Narama District football field.
According to police information, the victim had only arrived in Kwamki Narama for two days after traveling from Beoga District, Puncak Regency. Before the incident occurred, the victim was suspected of drinking alcohol with a number of people from the Newegalen group.
The dispute started when the victim went out onto the asphalt road. At that time, the crowd from the Dang group who were in the area immediately chased the victim to the front of the Kwamki Narama Police Headquarters. The crowd allegedly thought the victim was part of a rival group.
"They chased them until they were in front of the Sector Police then they shot them because they thought they were from the opposing party," said Inspector Yusak Sawaki.
The victim tried to save himself by running towards the back of the football field. However, he finally collapsed after being hit by a number of arrows and died at the scene.
Until now, the police are still investigating the status and involvement of victims in the conflict between groups. The reason is, the victim is known to have never been involved in previous acts of war or clashes in that area.
"We don't know for sure because he just came down from Beoga and didn't take part in the war," added Yusak.
The victim's body has been evacuated to the nearest hospital to undergo medical procedures before being handed over to the family. Meanwhile, security forces have increased patrols and security in the Kwamki Narama District area to prevent retaliation from warring groups.
"We are increasing patrols in the Kwamki Narama area to prevent retaliation," concluded Inspector Yusak Sawaki.
