How is rhinotracheitis transmitted?
It is transmitted through sneezing, saliva, snot and eye discharge from sick cats. It could also be through the cage, feeder, or our hands. This virus spreads most quickly in places with lots of cats, such as shelters.
What are the symptoms of rhinotracheitis?
Symptoms appear 2 to 5 days after infection. The most common things that appear are constant sneezing, runny nose, red watery eyes, fever, weakness, and not wanting to eat because the nose is blocked. In severe cases it can cause injury to the cornea of the eye.
Can rhinotracheitis be completely cured?
Symptoms can be cured. But the virus will remain in the body and sleep in the nerves. Later it can become active again if the cat is stressed or its immune system is low.
How to treat rhinotracheitis?
Until now there is no medicine to kill the virus. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Usually the doctor gives eye drops, antibiotics to prevent a second infection, an IV drip for dehydration, and vitamins to increase appetite.
Is it contagious to humans?
No. Rhinotracheitis only affects cats. Safe for humans and dogs.
How to prevent it?
Most effective with the FVRCP vaccine. Starting from 8 weeks of age then booster every year. Apart from vaccines, keep the cage clean and quarantine the new cats for 2 weeks before combining them.
When should you go to the vet?
Bring it straight away if the cat hasn't eaten and drank for 2 days, its eyes are festering and can't be opened, or its breathing is starting to get short of breath.
