Internet History
The history of the internet is the development of a global computer network that started from military and academic research projects, to become the main communications infrastructure in the world.
Background
In the 1960s, the United States Department of Defense through ARPA required a decentralized communications system. The goal is so that the network can continue to function even if some of its nodes are damaged. At the same time, universities also need a way to share computer resources between institutions.
ARPAnet
ARPAnet was launched in 1969 by the Advanced Research Projects Agency. This is the first network that is considered the forerunner of the internet.
The initial ARPAnet node connected four institutions: University of California Los Angeles, Stanford Research Institute, University of California Santa Barbara, and University of Utah.
ARPAnet uses packet switching technology. Data is broken down into small packets and sent over different paths, making it more efficient and tamper-proof.
Protocol development
In the 1970s, researchers developed protocols for connecting multiple networks. The term "internet" began to be used to refer to a network of networks.
On January 1, 1983, ARPAnet officially adopted the TCP/IP protocol as a communications standard. This event is considered the birth of the modern internet because all computers began to use the same communication rules.
Expansion into the academic field
In addition to ARPAnet, the National Science Foundation built NSFnet in 1986 to connect supercomputing centers.
The early services that were popular at that time were email, Usenet, and FTP. This service is widely used in campus environments to exchange scientific data.
World Wide Web
In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee at CERN, Switzerland, proposed a hypertext-based document system. This system later became known as the World Wide Web.
In 1991, the website was opened to the public. With browsers and the HTML language, the internet has become more accessible to the general public, not just researchers.
Internet in Indonesia
The internet entered Indonesia in the early 1990s through the IPTEKnet network. Institutions such as ITB and UI were the pioneers of early use.
In the early days, internet access was limited, using dial-up connections, and the speed was low.
Since the 2000s, commercial internet service providers and internet cafes have grown rapidly. Currently, the internet has become a major necessity in education, business, government and daily life in Indonesia.
Impact
The internet changes the way humans communicate, learn, work and do business. From the internet emerged technologies such as social media, e-commerce, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. The Internet also accelerates the spread of information and global collaboration.
