Dolphins Sleep with One Eye Open

If you've ever seen a dolphin that looks asleep but still seems alert, that's actually normal. Dolphins don't sleep the way humans do. Instead of resting their entire brain at once, they let only one half of the brain sleep while the other half stays awake.

This sleeping pattern is called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep. It allows dolphins to keep swimming, surface for air, watch for predators, and stay close to their pod while still getting the rest they need.

This remarkable adaptation is essential because dolphins breathe consciously. If their entire brain shut down during sleep, they wouldn't remember to surface for air.
