In my opinion, that's one of the biggest misconceptions in business. Revenue and profit are completely different. Revenue shows how much money comes in from sales, but it doesn't tell you how much is actually left after paying all the expenses.
For example, imagine a business generates Rp100 million in monthly sales. That sounds impressive at first. But if inventory, salaries, rent, utilities, advertising, and other operating costs add up to Rp92 million, the actual profit is only around Rp8 million. This simple example shows why high revenue doesn't automatically mean high earnings.
I've also seen business owners become obsessed with increasing revenue, even if it means accepting extremely small profit margins. Their stores look busy and sales keep growing, but when they review the numbers at the end of the month, they realize the business isn't making as much money as expected. That's why I think focusing only on revenue can sometimes create a misleading picture of success.
If I were running a business, I'd pay much closer attention to net profit than revenue alone. Knowing how much money remains after every expense is paid makes it much easier to decide whether a strategy is working, whether it's time to expand, or whether certain costs need to be reduced.
Another thing I always keep in mind is not to compare my business's revenue with someone else's. We rarely know how much they're spending to generate those sales. A business with lower revenue may actually earn more profit because it's operating more efficiently and controlling costs better.
If I could summarize this topic, I'd say revenue is important, but profit tells the real story. A healthy business isn't measured only by how much it sells, but by how well it manages expenses, protects cash flow, and creates sustainable earnings. Long-term success comes from building a business that remains profitable year after year, not simply one that looks impressive from the outside.
