Imagine visiting a peaceful park with walking paths, wooden benches, and green grass. Now picture coming back a few months later only to find the entire park sitting underwater. That sounds like something from a fantasy movie, but it's exactly what happens at Grüner See, also known as Green Lake, in Austria.
During the winter months, Grüner See looks like an ordinary park at the foot of the mountains. As spring arrives, however, melting snow from the surrounding peaks flows into the basin and slowly floods the area. Within weeks, the park transforms into a crystal-clear lake several meters deep. Benches, footpaths, bridges, and even small trees remain visible beneath the water, creating an almost surreal underwater landscape.
One of the most remarkable features of Green Lake is its incredible water clarity. Since the water comes directly from melting snow, it's exceptionally clean and transparent. On calm days, visitors can clearly see the submerged park below the surface, making it look like an underwater garden rather than a natural lake.
As summer progresses, the snowmelt gradually decreases. Without a constant supply of fresh water, the lake begins to shrink until it eventually disappears. By late summer or early autumn, the water has receded, revealing the same park that had been underwater just months earlier. This natural cycle repeats year after year, depending on snowfall and seasonal temperatures.
The lake once became a favorite destination for scuba divers who wanted to explore the submerged park. However, the growing number of visitors began affecting the fragile ecosystem. To protect the environment, local authorities introduced restrictions on diving, allowing nature to recover while preserving the site's unique beauty for future generations.
Grüner See is a perfect reminder that nature is constantly changing. Sometimes those changes take millions of years, but other times they happen right before our eyes. A place that looks completely ordinary in one season can become one of the most extraordinary landscapes on Earth just a few months later.
