A Giraffe's Tongue Is Bluish-Purple
If you've ever watched a giraffe eating, you may have noticed that its tongue looks surprisingly dark. Unlike most mammals, a giraffe's tongue is bluish-purple or nearly black. That's completely natural and has nothing to do with what it eats.
Scientists believe the dark pigmentation helps protect the tongue from the sun. Since giraffes spend many hours each day reaching for leaves high in trees, their tongues are constantly exposed to sunlight. The extra pigment is thought to reduce damage caused by ultraviolet rays.
A giraffe's tongue is also incredibly long, usually measuring around 45 to 50 centimeters. That extra length allows it to grab leaves between sharp acacia thorns without much difficulty.
